The Violin Method of learning Math and Physics

--

A pragmatic approach to learning Math and Physics, emphasizing initial memorization of formulas followed by extensive practice before delving into conceptual understanding.

The majority of students are directed by their parents to grasp concepts in Mathematics and Physics. From my experience as a tutor, it’s more effective to memorize formulas initially, practice problems extensively, and then delve into understanding the underlying concepts.

Trying to comprehend before practicing is akin to putting the cart before the horse. Let me take few examples to support my thesis.

For instance, consider the familiar school algebra formula (x+y)² = x²+y²+2xy; most of us memorized it and solved numerous problems before grasping its conceptual basis.

Similarly, with multiplication tables, we memorized them first and later understood the logic behind them, like realizing that 9*9=81 means adding 9 — 9 times.

In Physics, when I began teaching high school students, I initially spent a lot of time explaining concepts, but I found that most lacked the maturity or interest to appreciate the beauty of Physics. And boredom leads to disinterest, inattention, etc!

The students simply aimed to memorize formulas, solve numerical problems, pass exams, and move on. Consequently, I shifted my approach, focusing on drilling formulas and derivations into my students, reserving deeper explanations for those who show interest.

This change was inspired by my experience learning the violin in my 40s. My teacher didn’t expect me to immediately enjoy complex symphonies; instead, he had me practice basic notes repetitively until I could produce beautiful sounds.

Likewise, I aim to instill discipline and mastery in my students, knowing that true understanding will come with time and practice.

At a meta level , as STEM educators (and parents), it’s essential to moderate our anticipations of our youth.

Not everyone studying Maths/Physics aspires to emulate Einstein; many simply aim to pass exams and proceed with their lives and earn a living.

Or everyone who learns English wants to be a Shakespeare!

Hope this was of value 📚
