From Sharing Knowledge to Creating It
david deutsch : the beginning of infinity : creation of knowledge
Recently, I’ve found it hard to feel motivated about teaching math and science — my main job, the source of my daily dal/chawal/Wi-Fi. It’s not that I dislike it — it’s my Job, and I do it diligently. But it feels like being in a 20-year-old marriage: the love is there, but the spark of the early days is missing.
While reading David Deutsch’s The Beginning of Infinity, I stumbled upon the root of my unease. A recurring theme in the book is the “creation of knowledge.” Deutsch emphasizes this concept repeatedly, and it hit me — I’m not “creating” knowledge; I’m merely “sharing” it.
This realization explains why I’ve recently found greater fulfilment in writing poems, crafting short stories, or capturing moments through photography. These activities allow me to create something new, something uniquely mine — something I don’t always experience in my middle / high school classroom.
