From Numbers to Narratives: A Mathematician’s Exploration of Writing

--

Through personal anecdotes and reflections, here I discuss how incorporating writing into daily life has been enriching & finding the intersection between mathematics and writing.

Childhood Memories: Early Encounters with Numbers
I’ve been thinking about the influence of mathematics in my life, which stems from my father’s profession as a mathematician. Since childhood, numbers and calculations have been ingrained in me, from deciphering time on an old green watch with Radium dials to memorizing multiplication tables.
It’s amusing to recall how, amidst the chaos of our house being under construction when I was in elementary school, I was there, alongside the laborers, drilling through those tables from 2 to 19, much to their curious glances of all the workers at the site.

Exploration of Writing: Intrigued by Dr. Peterson’s Insights

For the last few years, I’ve found myself intrigued by Dr. Peterson’s insights on the Art of Writing — particularly his assertion that writing is essential for professional and personal growth.

What resonates deeply with me is this brief snippet I recently came across:

His impact on young men across the globe, serving as a guiding figure in their lives, underscores the power of effective communication and validates his assertion.

The Importance of Structure in Writing

Reflecting on my son’s journey in writing, I see how crucial structure is. Initially inundated with a flood of ideas, he struggled to organize them coherently. However, with time, he has learnt to channel his thoughts effectively, achieving a level of proficiency by his tenth grade. His grades as well his verbal skills reflect his growth.

As I examine my writing process, I recognize the parallels with mathematical structure. For instance, I ensure that each article is cantered around a singular theme, likening it to a spine that provides essential support and coherence to a piece.

As they say, mastery of structure is essential for effective communication. In quality writing, it is the harmony within a written work that captivates our intellect.

Writing into Daily Life

Inspired by Dr. Peterson’s ideas, I’ve begun incorporating writing into my daily life, starting with journaling.

Pouring out my thoughts onto the page has proven therapeutic, providing both catharsis and a space for introspection. Similar to meditation, writing allows me to detach from my thoughts, observing them impartially rather than becoming entangled in them.

(**Btw, check this video on YouTube about the art of journaling** Notes below**)

Seeking Further Insights

A brief snippet I watched this morning crystallized a particular idea for me. Mr. Sanjeev Sanyal’s clarity in making his point stood out . So impressed was I by this digital encounter that I promptly ordered his books from Amazon. Eager for more insights, I turned to YouTube to explore further offerings from this gentleman.

This experience emphasized the power of a good communicator.

Conclusions: Mathematics and Writing

And as this journey continues, let’s hope that my forthcoming articles would be more cohesive than this one is! Anyways — done is better than perfect :-)

See you in the next one — thanks for your time and indulgence 🍁

**VOMIT System of Journalling** Short notes from the Journalling video discussed above**

Venting (V): It clears the mind and organizes thoughts. The analogy of turning on the light to find keys is used.
Obligations (O): Organize obligations through journaling…set a low bar for daily tasks to maintain momentum and minimize guilt.
Mindset (M): Improve mindset…Techniques such as reframing, creating “because” statements, inversion, and gratitude are discussed. The importance of discipline in journaling for mindset improvement is highlighted.
Ideation (I): Use journaling to generate ideas…Techniques like brainstorming multiple solutions, considering how others would approach the problem, and opening loops are explained.
Trajectory (T): Use journaling to assess and adjust one’s trajectory…techniques for evaluating progress towards goals and capturing daily reflections to track hidden metrics like happiness are detailed.
