A king was sitting with his minister on top of his palace. Below the palace lived a poor labourer husband and wife who used to laugh a lot and were always happy.

The king asked the minister that I have infinite wealth and all the resources, but I have never been blessed with such laughter as this couple does. What is the reason?

The minister said — Maharaj, give me 99 Gold coins. I will tell you the reason.

The king gave 99 gold coins to the minister. The minister made a bag of that money and threw it on the cottage.

When both the husband and wife returned home after working, they saw a small bundle lying on top of the hut.

Upon discovering the unexpected windfall, the labourer and his wife spent the night counting the coins meticulously, only to find that the total was 99, not 100.

Perplexed, they decided to sacrifice a meal in an attempt to add the missing gold coin to their fortune. Consumed by the desire to increase their wealth, they sacrificed sleep and peace of mind, becoming perpetually restless.

One day the minister said to the king, “Now look Maharaj, what is happening below.

The king saw that both of them were lying in thought in the courtyard, holding their heads. The happiness and joy was over. The king asked him what has happened to the couple.

The minister said- “They have now joined the ranks of Club 99, much like yourself, Maharaj. In their pursuit of earning that elusive gold coin, their happiness has waned. You, engaged in amassing riches, understand the toll money takes on one’s joy.”

Only then did the king understand that becoming member of Club 99 was a tough decision.

The moral of the story became evident: only those who endure the challenges of Club 99 can truly find lasting happiness!

🍁This is a popular Indian fable. The idiom —निन्यानवे का फेर — is based on this story. I hope you learnt something from it.
